Or watching videos on Youtube like this new one from Xiu Xiu:

Or listening to loads of music on Spotify like the playlist I made on Friday or old albums by U2, Camera Obscura and C.V. Jørgensen.

And now, a crime novel (and a German one, who'd have thought :-)) and bed.

A trip down memory lane...

I've spent the day being ill, trying not to throw up and having this strange craving for Toffifee. And making this playlist of songs I loved in the 80ies (and that means that I had to love them at the time, not songs I love now, otherwise the list would've been a rather different one, including a lot of songs by The Smiths :-)):

1980: I really can't remember any songs that I loved that year (I was only five), but I listened a lot to either Shu-bi-dua or Gasolin, so I chose the sentimental favourite of the latter, "Længes Hjem" (if I ever get to play at a large festival, I wanna play that one as the encore :-)).

1981: Blondie: "Rapture". We listened to Blondie rather a lot, when we drove around in my dad's car.

1982: Steve Miller Band: "Abracadabra". From the first tape I got, X-mas that year! Some sort of "Best of 82" (there was a song by ABBA-Frida on it, too). It might have been the easy-to-sing-when-you're-seven-chorus that made me like it in the first place :-).

1983: Tracey Ullman: "They Don't Know". Fuck it, I loved that one! Did I ever tell you that I'm a sucker for cheesy-slightly-sad-pop? I even like the "baby" approx. 1.52 :-).

1984: Tears for Fears: "Shout". This is still a tremendously cool song! ""and in return you gave them Hell / as cold as ice / I hope we live to tell the tale". Yup, that's pretty cool, too.

1985: A-ha: "Take On Me". Well, one of the best pop songs ever written! Not much else to say.

1986: The Bangles: "Walk Like An Egyptian". Oh, this is good. And I had a pre-teen crush on Susanna Hoffs (and later a teen crush, too :-)).

1987: U2: "Where The Streets Have No Name". I could've taken any song from "The Joshua Tree", since it's the album that I've heard the most times (without doubt!). I bought the tape in Oslo (and later the vinyl) and it still sends shivers down my spine, when I listen to it.

1988: U2: "Bullet The Blue Sky (live)". I saw the movie in Tønder (the cinema in Skærbæk closed down just after showing "Footloose" in 1984 :-)). Apparently, it ain't that great a movie, but I was blown away anyway. And this heavy version, goddammit! And the light-thing (used on the cover)! Well, I'm just gonna show it:

1989: The Cure: "Lovesong". Being a rather depressed teen (well, who isn't), I loved this. Got it for X-mas (my mom got it right this year, not like 1984, when she gave me Duran Duran's "Arena" instead of Wham's "Make It Big" :-)).

Two: A new song from Burning Hearts, "Burn Burn Burn" (I rather enjoy the tempo shifts of that one).

Tomorrow the new album "Monolith" by Mads Bjørn will be hitting the streets. I've had the pleasure of getting a pre-listen and there's a good deal of good stuff on this one, I can tell you. Like the almost cute spiritual "I'm So Glad (Trouble Don't Last Always)", the instrumental "GNMCP" (sorta Notwist-ish here) or the lovely ballad "White Trees". At times I'm even thinking "this is a whole lot like Loney Dear" (which is a pretty cool thing), for instance the outtro of "The State I'm In" (I'm very much a sucker for that bass!). Or this one:

And listening to a lot of Locas In Love songs (first found over at Stytzer), they sound a bit like Malcolm Middleton (who apparently also plays the guitar on one album), Herman Düne and Yo La Tengo (in a pop version), so I like it very much! And had a very nice evening yesterday, where Kathrine and I went to this thing arranged by Trinitatis Natkirke as a way of saying "thank you" to the artists, who've played there this year. Dinner, beer, wine, a goodie bag, a few small concerts and hanging out with bands such as Antennas to Nowhere and So Like Dorian, lovely indeed. So today I've just been relaxing, drinking coffee, eating Toffifee and reading Lone Hørslev's "Sorg og Camping". It's a bit too "female" (the language, that is) to me, but the description of small town Denmark in the 80ies is both accurate and funny, so very much recommended!

Today it's Carl Jørn's birthday. That means that he's now (in his own words) also closer to 50 than 20 :-). And I thought that we'd celebrate that. I've known CJ since we were 16 and I've had the pleasure of playing with him in such marvellous bands as So What, So What Revival Band and Den Blå Agurk. And to be quite honest we don't always agree on what constitutes good music. But I always send him our demos, because I really value his opinion. So I sent him the song below. It was supposed to be included on the "Monte Carlo" EP, but we decided against it, because the sound was kinda wrong somehow. And CJ was like: "No, it's a really cool song, sounding a lot like Neil Young". And I was like: "Yeah, it's ok, but I don't like the sound of it". And he was like: "You kidding?". And I was like: "No". And etc. And etc. But since it is his birthday, here it is. It's called "Oslo" (rather appropriate, since CJ lives in Norway now) and it's a countrypop song about going to Kalvøya Festival in 1993, being teen, ever so slightly drunk, kissing a girl and listening to Neil Young for the first time. And it's a demo, so the sound IS kinda-not-that-good.

That has got to be one of the cosiest festivals around! So despite the awful weather the facts remain that: Some girls actually danced to "A Night in Monte Carlo"!? / Mikkel's son, Vito, was on stage during the last few songs / We played Arab Strap's "Afternoon Soaps" as the last song, and it won't be the last time we do that, damn, I love that one (oh, and I hope that the girl who had a date while we played had a good time, too :-)). After the concert we had a few beers and white russians (VERY cheap) and just hung out with the other festivalgoers in a tent while the rain was pouring down. And I'm thinking that this might be the reason why I've been rather tired and slightly ill since :-). So tired that I haven't been able to do much apart from reading and watching the tv. And this kinda bizarre yet cool video by Orca Team (I very much like the song, sorta twangy stuff meeting new wave, Beat Happening-style):

Yay, "Cover Me" got a spin on Under the Covers on Radio 1190, gotta love that thing called the internet.

And I've had a bloody marvellous weekend. Tour de France on tv, a few beers Friday and Saturday and watching all episodes of Pennies From Heaven (that is one of the best tv series ever made, goddamn!).

And now I'm listening to the new album by Jacob Faurholt. It's called "Dark Hours", it's out August 15th and it's seriously cool. So if you're into slacker-lo-fi-folk, mark that date, please. Personal favourites are: "Dark Hours", "The Hoax", "Medicine", "Untitled" (I love that chorus!) and this one:

In the studio...

If it wasn't for the rather lousy weather, I'd be sitting in my garden (the picture) with a cup of coffee and relaxing after the last couple of days in the studio. But no. But at least we're almost done recording two songs, yay! This time it's gonna be a single the old-fashioned way (though a digital release, naturally :-)) with an A and a B side. The A side with the hit (in this case a rather sad and not very hit like folk song called "Crank it up") and the B side where you can do whatever the hell you feel like, because nobody's listening to it anyway (in this case a completely screwed up and almost instrumental western anthem called "Helldiver"). And all we need is a bit of backing vocals and mademoiselle Felding's cello, so expect a release sometime in Autumn.

And since I'm stuck inside, I'm going for some light reading, perhaps a beer and then bed, for sure.

Danish summer, gotta love it. Two cool things about it, though.

And I had a lovely weekend, doing absolutely nothing, just reading a novel, watching the Danish U21 team getting their asses kicked by Iceland and going for a few walks in the neighbourhood. The latter made me realise that I haven't found this year's summer song or album yet (I usually listen to music when I'm walking, that's why). It also made me think back and quickly compile a list of summer songs 2000-2010. And here it is (I'll post it in three parts, one today, one tomorrow and one Wednesday, since a large amount of Youtube-videos ain't no good in one blog-post :-)):

So this evening I'll just do some reading and then it's bedtime.

That was fun! If I may so myself, we played a pretty goddamn cool concert! And the audience and the other bands were cool too, so we had a lovely, lovely evening. We'll post some pictures on Facebook soonish, but the two above will at least give you an idea of how it looks with a guitar / bass battle going on and how tired you can actually look going home at 4 in the morning ;-).

Oh, and btw, as I said in the previous post I'm reading a book about Medieval Europe. It's got some very interesting points, but since I'm assuming that most of this blog's readers aren't historians, I won't bore you with the details :-). However, one cool (and not history related) thing about it is that it reminded me of Charlemagne (the band, that is). But I couldn't locate my cd and finding the song that I really, really, really wanted to hear proved rather difficult. Luckily, in the end I found it, it's called "August Evenings" and it's right here, so go listen, it's brilliant!

A cover story...

Well, here it is, the EP cover. It was done by brilliant French guy, Tristan Dupuis, who's got this site:

But there's actually a story behind the drawing. See, the thing is that Mikkel and I met the girl on the left (Héloise) the very day we decided that we'd have to make two bands. It happened at the Psyched Up Janis reunion concert in Øksnehallen, where the beer was free and everybody was happy, so after a long talk I thought "yeah, well, I'll sing in a band just to make Mikkel shut up and who cares about stage fright anyway". Then a couple of months later our friend Jeff, Mikkel and yours truly threw a party at Jeff's place. We invited everyone we knew and Héloise and her cousin (Diane, the girl on the right) were among those who turned up. And since the themes were: Watching Spinal Tap, eating tapas and having loads of drinks, it ended up being a very lovely evening. And this picture was taken:

So you see, everything's sorta connected in a rather good way. On a slightly different note, I actually wrote the first Boombox song that I was really happy about ("Extras, when you're ready, please") the day after the party (and it was amazingly easy to do, despite the most massive hangover in recent years :-)).

I received this promo mail from Seattle-based Echo Tongues the other day (one of the cool things about having a band blog). I was too busy to check the link at the time, but yesterday I did and oh yeah! Keywords? Well, minimal-twee (if that's a term, if not then I just invented it), gentle lo-fi and shoegaze. And since I'm a sucker for all of the above, it's very much recommended! And the EP is for free right over here, so I'm suggesting that you go get it :-).

Apart from that? Not much, I seem to work a lot and send a lot of promo mails myself, but tonight I'm gonna relax and write some lyrics or something. Or perhaps continue the crap novel I'm reading at the moment. Or something else.

Ok, so now I've bought the album. And I'm just gonna repeat myself: holy goddamn moly! We're talking understated shoegaze, 60ies pop, psych and a whole lotta reverb in one cool mix. The songs are structured and arranged in a slightly weird and at times simple manner (sorta like The Walkmen), but there are still so many indie hymns you ain't gonna believe it. Try this chorus for instance:

And yeah, I'm predicting that they'll be huge (and I'm thinking that quite a few indie girls will love'em to the absolute max too :-)).

What a lovely weekend! Rehearsing on Friday, followed by a concert at Ungdomshuset. And Saturday and Sunday spent on relaxing and finishing "The Finkler Question". I kinda enjoyed it, but it's a trifle long for a novel without a "real" plot and two of the main characters are the most obnoxious persons I've read about in ages, so it ain't no must-read.
